Market Insights

The penetration of e-commerce and growing product recalls in the automotive and pharmaceutical industry all over the world are driving the global growth of the reverse logistics market. Reverse logistics refers to the process of operation that leads the product from the point of consumption (consumer) to the point of origin (manufacturer, distributor or retailer) for repair, disposal, replacement, refurbishment and other purposes. Global e-commerce retail was valued at US$ 2.8 Tn in 2018, out of which more than 25% of the products were returned.

Simultaneously, more than 8 per cent of brick & mortar products are returned each year, boosting the worldwide growth of the reverse logistics market. Automotive & pharmaceutical manufacturers ‘ product recalls, the introduction of blockchain technology in logistics and strict government regulations on e-waste are the other major factors responsible for the growth of the reverse logistics market. As a result of these factors, we expect a significant increase in the global reverse logistics market during the forecast period from 2019 to 2027.

Based on the type of costs incurred, the reverse logistics market was divided into three segments: manufacturer, distributor and retailer. The manufacturing segment was the largest value contributor, accounting for more than 50% of the market share in 2018. Huge numbers of product recalls in the automotive and pharmaceutical industries and returns in the e-commerce sector are the main reasons for the growth of the segment.  For example, according to the National Highway Safety Administration, in 2018, manufacturers alone recalled more than 29.3 Mn of vehicles in the U.S. In the global pharmaceutical industry, around 5 per cent of products are recalled by regulators and government agencies, and around 25 per cent of products are shipped for refurbishment every year. We therefore expect the manufacturer segment to continue to lead the reverse logistics market throughout the forecast period.

Based on the geography, Asia Pacific was the market leader backed by North America and Europe in 2018. Asia Pacific accounted for more than 30% of its revenue share in the same year. Regional market growth is attributed to a large share of the manufacturing sector and the growing e-commerce sector in the region. Moreover, Asia Pacific was the largest e-commerce market with sales of around US$ 830.0 billion in 2018. Another major growth factor is the incorporation of specialized reverse logistics companies in the region. China has the largest share of the Asian Pacific reverse logistics market due to its No. 1 position in the manufacturing industry with over US$ 2.2 billion in manufacturing output in 2017. As a result, we expect Asia Pacific to remain the key contributor to the reverse logistics market during the forecast period.

Major market players are developing new strategies, such as product launches, to increase their market presence. For example, FedEx Corporation’s subsidiary FedEx Supply Chain launched FedEx Fulfillment in February 2017. FedEx Fulfillment will provide e-commerce solutions to medium and small businesses to deliver orders from a variety of channels, such as online marketplaces and websites. FedEx Fulfillment will also help manage inventories and provide reverse logistics solutions.
